Mohammed Said Hjiouij is a Moroccan novelist and blogger born in Tangier in 1982. Hjiouij started his career in the publishing field and in 2004 founded a monthly cultural magazine called Literary Tangier which ran for more than two years. In 2005, he engaged in a number of small e-publishing projects including the electronic journals Madaraat and Blogging Without Borders. Later, he published a manual entitled ABC of Blogging (‘alfiba’ altadwin) which outlines the major theoretical and practical frameworks for blogging.
Hjiouij published two short-story collections The Occurrence of Things (Ashyaa’ Tahdoth, 2024) and Postponed Suicide (Intihaar Marga’, 2006). His novella By Night in Tangier (Layl Tanja, 2019) won the inaugural Ismail Fahd Ismail Prize in 2019 and his novel Edmond Amran El Maleh’s Puzzle (Ahjiyat Edmun Amran El Maleh, 2020) was shortlisted for the Ghassan Kanafani Award for Arabic Fiction 2022 and was translated into Hebrew. His short novel Kafka in Tangier (Kafka fi Tanja) was well-received after its publication in 2019 and was translated into English, and Greek, and is forthcoming in Spanish. Hjiouij also writes poetry and was awarded “Tangier, The Poetess” Prize in 2004 for his poem “Inkisarat al-Hallaj” (al-Hallaj’s Breakdown). His most recent works include a novel The Maze of Illusions (matahat al-awham, 2023) and a novella Caves of Slabs (kahf al-alwah, 2024)
