Bachir Mefti and Assia Moussei founded Al Ikhtilef primarily publishing texts in Arabic, making a name for themselves with their collection of books on social sciences, and with translations of authors such as Max Weber, Tsevan Tedorov, or François Furet. Al Ikhtilef also endeavours to make available to Arabic-language readers the great French-language Algerian authors, such as Mohamed Dib and Kateb Yacine.
