Writer, journalist, and political dissident Hussein Aoudat founded Dar Al Ahali in Damascus in 1987. It became a renowned house in the Arab world publishing well known writers such as Saadallah Wannous, Mahmoud Shoukair, and Mamdouh Azzam. Aoudat died in 2016 and the publishing house is no longer in operation.
