An Egyptian writer and diplomat, born in 1966 in Kuwait where his parents were working, Ezzeddine Fishere moved to Egypt at the age of two. After his studies (a degree in Political Science in Cairo, a diploma in Public Administration at the École Nationale d’Administration in Paris, a Master’s degree in International Relations at the University of Ottawa, and a doctorate in Political Science in Montreal), he worked in the Egyptian diplomatic service and, later, as adviser to the United Nations’ political missions in Jerusalem then Sudan. He also worked for International Crisis Group before joining the American University in Cairo. In 2016 he moved to the United States where he teaches Middle East politics at Dartmouth College. In his novels he dares to give voice to “uncomfortable” characters, for example, a supporter of 9/11 in Embrace on Brooklyn Bridge and a member of the Secret Services in Intensive Care Unit. Salah Fadl, a leading literary critic in Egypt, declared in a recent review that he “has confidently entered the canon of Arabic literature”.
