Karam Youssef established the Kotob Khan bookshop in 2006 and two years later her publishing company. Kotob Khan now steadily publishes 25 to 30 books a year in both fiction and non-fiction, including titles in translation. Kotob Khan authors have been short and longlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, and have won a Sheikh Zayed prize, a Sawiris Award, and twice the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature.
